The Help: shown Thursday, 3 May 2012

The Help is based on the New York Times best seller by Kathryn Stockett and brings the book to life through the powerful performances of a phenomenal ensemble cast led by Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer (who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress).

Set in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, the film tells how Skeeter Phelan (Emma Stone), a young, white would-be writer, convinces two black maids, Aibileen and Minny (Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer), to work secretly with her on a book.

Skeeter wants the maids to reveal, anonymously, the hardships routinely inflicted on them by the wealthy families whose food they cook and whose children they raise – thereby winning them a valuable step towards true racial equality and her a big fat publishing deal.

The Help is an inspirational, courageous and empowering story about very different, extraordinary women who build an unlikely friendship. Filled with poignancy, humour and hope, The Help is a timeless, universal and triumphant story about the ability to create change.

Ides of March - Thursday, 1 March

We had a really good turnout for our first Titchfield Moviola show - nearly a full house. The venue was a success and the movie was well received.

The Ides of March is a a tense and powerful political drama set a few days before a heavily-contested Ohio Presidential Primary when an up-and-coming campaign press secretary finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate's election chances.

George Clooney stars, co-writes and directs a superb cast including Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jennifer Ehle and Ryan Gosling. The acting is excellent and the build up and subsequent breakdown of relationships is nicely paced. In the toxic world of politics the brutal nature, as well as the human frailties, of the characters are deftly handled, keeping us in touch with them. A compelling drama, it does employ the stock of the potentially juicy political scandal, but plays it out in an unexpected and satisfying way.

We give it a 3.5 out of 5.

We would love to hear your comments and ratings.
